Yesterday was a blast!
This is almost one of those “adult” stories. You know the kind. You get a text message to do something with a friend you haven’t seen in a long time. Everyone agrees to getting together, but a date isn’t set and nothing ever happens.
It all started with a text message from my friend, Marcus. “Hey man, do you still golf?”
That was a bit of a loaded question. Do I still golf? Not really. I haven’t played a round of golf in 2 to 3 years. Would I still golf? With the right group of people, of course!
What many people don’t know is that I was stuck in junior golf when I was a young teenager. I wasn’t much better back then either and it wasn’t a game that I was thrilled to play. Although I did play pretty decent and came in near the top during the few tournaments I played. But, I was never destined to play on the PGA level.
So, I answer the text question with “Yes, but I completely suck”.
Marcus responded with “Latu and I want to golf with you. And we all suck so it doesn’t matter.”
Narrator voice: they did not in fact actually suck
The best thing that came from that was the feeling of being wanted. That is an awesome feeling and I don’t care who you are! Everyone wants to feel wanted or invited to things – especially with long time friends.
Well, as most of adult life goes, a week or so went by and no golfing was set up. Then I received a Direct Message from Latu: “Hey, we still want to golf with you.”
I’ve always had this thing about when something comes back to you, or comes to you twice, that you need to accept it. There was a time when I was in college and the Operations Manager of the commercial radio station I was working at wanted me to join the morning show. I told him I wasn’t interested in waking up before 4am to be part of the show. He came back to me a week or so later and asked me again, and it was then that I decided if someone is coming to me twice about something that perhaps I should give it a shot. Turns out, I ended up becoming part of that morning show!
So I decided to check my calendar after receiving the DM from Latu. Here’s the days and times I have available in the next week.
Turns out Monday was free for me and the best day for both of these guys to golf! 🏌️♀️
The tee time got set up all thanks to Marcus doing the dirty work of checking courses and tee times available.
To be honest, I was nervous and wanted to cancel because I thought my golf game would be horrible. But, I also wanted to spend time with my friends more than I cared about my golf game.
Turns out, I didn’t play horribly (a lot of bogey’s. Perhaps some double bogey’s), and I only lost 2 balls! Not bad for not playing a round of golf in 2 – 3 years.
I suppose my only wish is that it didn’t take us the entire season to link up (haha, no pun intended). I also wish I wore more sunscreen that day.
Here’s to great friends and improving my golf game.
Thanks Marcus and Latu. You’re fantastic guys and I’m so grateful to call you my friends. 💖
