Riverton was settled in the mid-1850s and began to grow as a town when water was made available for irrigation. The irrigation water came from multiple channels off the Jordan River which provided agricultural use to the benchland. Farming was essential to those living in Riverton until the area grew due to urban sprawl.
Riverton residents enjoy the annual Town Days July 4th celebration with a rodeo, parade, and fireworks. The city has 33 parks and over 4,500 acres of green space for public use. It is also part of the Jordan River Parkway running north-south following the Jordan river. The trail connects neighboring cities and counties and runs from The Great Salt Lake south to Utah Lake.
